ARTIST STATEMENT

The New Topographic photographers of the 1970’s, especially Lewis Baltz, have long been a great influence. Their success can be attributed to the incredible compositions formed from the mundane, even boring, subjects such as office parks and parking lots.
This is a style I try to achieve in my work. The difference, however, is that while composition is of the utmost importance, creative use of available light and sometimes color can add more flavor to the otherwise bland.
For example, while shooting 4x5 film in the back alleys of Chicago, the nighttime proved to be much more interesting than day. Artificial light of all temperatures provided colors and drama where the subjects seemed to emerge from darkness.
Presently, I am travelling the Midwestern United States for my day job, then head out at dusk with my camera and tripod to find some inspiration in the uninspired.
