Random Seating: An Exploration of Individuals and Their Environments

(premiered on 11/09/2007)

Random Seating is an experimental narrative short film about a young Thai woman living in Chicago has to learn how to accept the reality part of life, by clashing into random characters and get involved in the randomness of unforeseen events.

The making process is also influenced by John Cage's Chance Operations. Each of three happening scenes consists of actor(s) with rigid scripting, some with improvisation, and some are real people who were present at the public places where the film was being shot, which resulted spontaneuos random interactions.

"Chance operation therapy of John Cage has influenced me the most for the making and concept of this film. It gives us all the possible unexpected, and randomness of life. Many times I have experienced it myself where I plan so precisely and become so certain of events in life, yet as soon as you think you know what everything is and where everything is going, something else unforeseen always happens, whether it's good or bad. But, I like to think that it's all good. All that happens in life and in reality is meant to be learned then we grow from it. As my work is in nature and with my own life experience, I am convinced that no one can be fully alone in an environment. They are, at least, with themselves. And, not only will one's thoughts or actions affect their surrounding, but their surrounding also more or less affects one's thoughts and actions. Energy exchanged, life goes on. imagine that.. "  -R. Mahakanjana
